Let me tell you a story...
Once upon a time, there were two best friends. One was named Edgar and the other was named Peter. They were incredibly close; closer than brothers even. Many people accused them of being gay, but that was just because they didn't understand the agape. Neither did either of them, if they were fully honest about it, but it was good and they accepted it. :)
Edgar had always been the more emotional of the two. His moods seemed to be very affected by the weather, and he often suspected that he had SAD. But it was ok, because Peter had helped him through his many emotional phases many many times. Peter had some problems too, but he didn't blow them out of proportion near as often as Edgar did. So the "scale" was unbalanced. But either way, Peter and Edgar told each other everything.
Over the course of one summer, while Edgar was busying himself with marching band and volunteering, Peter was also very busy with his new job and his special choir group. In the choir group, Peter became very good friends with a girl named Louise. It also helped that they were in the same math class the previous year as well.
Now, both Edgar and Peter had known Louise before that summer, and they were all pretty good friends. Not like intensely chummy, but you know.
So, Edgar and Peter went back to school after not hanging out much over the summer and they were still really good friends. They hung out more than they usually did over the previous summers, and it was really good times. But this year, there was a new addition to the Edgar and Peter friendship! Her name was Louise. It was really cool because Peter and Louise were already super close, and it didn't take long for Edgar to become close with Louise either. In fact, Peter noticed that it was almost as though Edgar had just walked up and suddenly become closer with Louise than he was. Though Peter denied it, Edgar could tell he was a bit jealous.
Not long after Peter had observed that Louise and Edgar were super close, Edgar began to like Louis, and Louise began to like Edgar. Peter thought it would be cool if his two best friends were dating, so naturally Edgar allowed himself to fall for Louise. Edgar and Louise became quite close and Edgar was getting up the nerve to ask her out, when all of a sudden life got incredibly busy for both Edgar and Louise, so Edgar decided to wait a while. Louise was in the middle of a musical at school, and Edgar was trying to figure out how to catch up in all of his classes, because somehow senior year had screwed him over. During that time, Louise and Edgar didn't see each other very much. Louise began to flirt with guys from the musical, and Edgar watched from the sidelines as his chances of asking her out slowly seemed to slip away. Peter politely informed Edgar that time was not on his side if he waited much longer, confirming Edgar's fears. A day or two after Peter had told Edgar the news, Louise kissed another boy during musical rehearsal. Peter told Edgar the story that night and they sat in Peter's car and they laughed and laughed because for some reason, Peter found it incredibly funny. Edgar realized later that he was not as ok with the situation as he initially thought he was.
But it was not for the reasons you'd think, such as "Oh, he must've been heartbroken! He missed his chance to ask Louise out. He wanted to so bad." This was not the case. In fact, Edgar had been talking himself out of asking Louise while they were both incredibly busy. He had come up with multiple reasons, including: Edgar found himself jealous of almost every guy that Louise came in contact with, and that was no way to start a good relationship. Also, though he hated to admit it, Edgar was a little afraid to get into another relationship.
So, either way, Louise and the boy that Louise kissed were incredibly freaked out that Edgar hated both of them. Edgar thought it best to just sit back and stay out of the way until Louise and the boy Louise kissed got over themselves. So he did. When they finally got over it, Edgar jumped back in as if nothing had happened and just left it at that. The situation pretty much resolved itself, but Edgar was still left with mixed feelings toward Louise.
To be continued...
